Biometric Fingerprint Access
Once registered, just swipe your finger on the sensor for access to your files. Up to five fingerprint profiles can be stored and can be accessed without software on the host system.

The Aegis Bio’s unique Embedded Enrollment keeps all fingerprint enrollment and authentication within the Aegis Bio circuitry, independent of the host system. While other biometric drives use a CD emulation module or software on the host system for fingerprint enrollment, the Aegis Bio requires no software, enabling it to be used on any USB host regardless of OS.

The fingerprint sensor uses an Advanced live layer imaging technology to provide the most accurate fingerprint image possible, using a patented dual-plate active pixel design, superior to competitors that use only a single passive pixel design. The sensor uses three different sensing methods that penetrate outer layers of skin to read live layers under the skin (Anti-spoofing protection), meeting the stringent image quality requirements of NIST and the FBI, something that no other silicon fingerprint sensor has achieved.

Is there any other way to access the drive without using the fingerprint scanner?

No. Until the scanner authenticates the user’s fingerprint, the drive will not even be visible to the operating system.

How many fingerprints should be enrolled?

The minimum recommendation would be to enroll 3 fingerprints. There is a maximum of 5 fingerprints; however you may want to reserve 1 or 2 for future use. Once all 5 spots are taken, the only method of removing fingerprints is to re-set the drive, which will erase all stored fingerprints and data on the drive.

Will the Aegis Bio’s fingerprint reader interfere with the fingerprint reader that is built into my laptop.

No. The circuitry for the Aegis Bio’s fingerprint reader is securely isolated from any communications that might come from your computer or any other source.

Why doesn’t my Aegis Padlock 3.0, Aegis Padlock DT or Aegis Bio 3.0 work with my computer’s USB 3.0 port?

A very small percentage of computer manufacturers incorporate an ASMedia 1042 or 1043 USB 3.0 Host Bus Controller. Revision 1 thru 4 of this ASMedia chipset does not adhere to the USB 3.0 standard and is not compatible with Apricorn USB 3.0 products. If your computer was manufactured with one of these chipsets, you will only be able to use your Apricorn product on a USB 2.0 port. For troubleshooting purposes you can view the manufacturer of your USB 3.0 chipset by viewing the properties of your USB 3.0 controller in the computer's Device Manager, unfortunately the revision of the chipset is not displayed.

Why does my drive automatically lock after 7-15 minutes?

Starting with Windows 8 and OSX for the Mac, there is a power setting that will attempt to put all drives to sleep to save power.



For the Mac

Open Energy Saver settings (Applications -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver) and uncheck the option “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.

For Windows 8.0

From the start screen, type “edit power” and choose to edit plan settings. Select the “Change advanced power setting”. Expand the Hard Disk setting and change the setting ("Never" is a good option if the computer does not operate on battery power).

Also Expand the USB setting and change the USB selective suspend setting and change it to “disable”.

For Windows 8.1

There is a known bug in 8.1 where the above settings will not make the desired change. Microsoft has recently competed a fix to resolve this problem that can be found here.

Q. What is BadUSB and are Apricorn devices susceptible to this exploit?

A. BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August of 2014. SR Labs demonstrated a vulnerability in one USB device that allowed malicious code to be programmed into the USB controller through a firmware update process. The attack described is very sophisticated and in the case of Apricorn’s products would require advanced knowledge of our USB controller, a leaked version of our firmware, the programming tool to update our controller, the password used for our programming tool, and an in depth understanding of the device’s functionality, etc. According to SR Labs, the failsafe method to eliminate this threat is to simply disable the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Many of Apricorn’s devices shipping today, including all of our USB 3.0 security products, Padlock and Padlock Pro families already have the firmware locked which prevents field updates to the USB controller. As a continuous improvement, Apricorn is locking down the firmware on all USB controllers used in Apricorn devices to safeguard against this vulnerability. We recommend checking our website periodically for notices regarding BadUSB and Security Updates.
