Apricorn’s DriveWire Universal Hard Drive Adapter is the perfect tool for IT departments, techies, or anyone that needs to interface to a hard drive. Simple and easy to use, DriveWire provides a USB interface to virtually any PATA/IDE or SATA hard drive, 2.5” or 3.5”.
DriveWire is the ideal solution for transferring the data from a desktop or notebook PC to a new hard drive in a few easy steps. It makes what can otherwise be a daunting and tricky process, painless and easy.

DriveWire is bundled with Apricorn's "Upgrade Suite" which features the award winning EZ Gig cloning software with Data Select for Windows and Shirt Pocket's SuperDuper! for Mac. When used together, DriveWire makes it easy to transfer your OS, data, applications, documents, address books, e-mail, settings and preferences from the old drive to a new drive, in few easy steps.

Start by attaching the new 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive to the appropriate connector on DriveWire's cable head. Then connect the AC power adapter and the USB cable. Now, boot up your computer using the Upgrade Suite bootable CD and make and exact clone of the old drive onto a new drive. After the transfer is completed, install the new hard drive into the desktop or notebook, and the computer will boot up just like normal.

DriveWire includes: Apricorn's Upgrade Suite with EZ Gig Cloning software with Data Select for Windows and Shirt Pocket's SuperDuper! for Mac, a hybrid adapter that connects to any 2.5" , 3.5" IDE/PATA or SATA Hard Drive, USB 2.0 cable (USB 1.1 compatible) and high quality UL Listed power adapter.

This unique adapter provides a SATA connector for the new style drives as well as 44 pin connector for a 2.5" Notebook IDE/PATA Hard Drive and 40 pin connector for a standard 3.5" IDE/PATA Hard Drive, allowing you to connect a hard drive to any desktop or notebook computer with a USB 2.0 port. This is the perfect solution for anyone needing immediate or temporary access to a Hard Drive.

You won't need to buy a different enclosure for every Hard Drive or worry about whether or not you have enough power through your USB ports run the device. Because DriveWire is guaranteed to safely provide all the power you need and it is compatible with all of today's 2.5, 3.5 IDE/PATA or SATA Hard Drives. When you combine DriveWire with Apricorn's Upgrade Suite you will have the perfect solution to upgrade the hard drive on all of today's most popular desktop and notebook computers.

Upgrading your system to a high performance 7,200 RPM hard drive

For most applications, a standard 5,400 RPM notebook drive provides great performance, but what if you are looking for even greater speeds?

In addition to increasing capacity, Apricorn's high performance 7,200 RPM drives can also increase your notebook's speed. The fastest available hard drive for notebook computers, Apricorn's Xtreme Drives have a 70% faster spindle speed and a 400% larger cache over 4200 RPM drives. These drives can improve overall system performance by 30%, providing desktop performance in a notebook computer.

Due to the higher spin rate of a high performance 7,200 RPM drive, you will need an upgrade kit with an AC Apdapter for additional power.

This is a great device I've used many times to recover my daughter's laptop HDs and HDs belonging to friends.

Well worth the price and extremely easy to use! Don't wait, buy it now!! (Posted on 1/11/12)

  2. Excellent solution for troubleshooting Drives Review by Paul H

I originally used the DriveWire to clone my paltry 160GB Notebook HDD to a 500GB unit and ultimately to a 640GB unit.

Meanwhile, (as an IT guy) I find attaching an infected HDD using the DriveWire and running a malware scan on it effectively rids the drive of a lot of malware (such as the Fake-AV strains). When I replace the HDD into the original PC the rogue is disabled and an additional scan removes the residuals.

I've been a fan of Apricorn solutions since 1995 and recommend their solutions to all my peers. Their Ez Gig software is a reliable solution to Image and Clone PC systems (regardless of the operating system). Simple boot to the CD and go! (Posted on 10/3/11)

Very compact device but works as designed with IDE, PATA, and SATA drives. Use it for data recovery all the time. Much easier and less expensive than buying a USB enclosure for a drive that you know is either marginal or going bad. One of my best work tools! (Posted on 9/30/11)

Ask Question

Can the DriveWire be used with the older USB 1.1 port?

Yes. The DriveWire is backward compatible with older versions of USB.

Will the DriveWire work with 1.8” laptop drives?

Most 1.8” drives will use the Micro SATA connector. There are adapters on the market (Micro SATA to SATA) which can be used to work with the DriveWire.

Can the DriveWire be used without the cloning software?

Yes. The DriveWire can be used as a way of accessing data on a drive and no software needs to be used to accomplish this. Once plugged in, the drive should show up as a new drive letter in My Computer (assuming the drive is formatted and partitioned). For new drives, access disk management to partition and format the drive. It can then be used as a storage drive.

Can the DriveWire be used to recover data off an old drive?

If the drive shows up in Windows explorer, the DriveWire can be used (without the software) to access the file system and recover files. If the drive does not show up, recovery software can sometimes be used to recover files on a corrupted drive. This assumes that the drive is still functional.

What Mac software is included with my DriveWire?

Shirt Pocket SuperDuper! is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. It’s incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs! SuperDuper’s interface confirms all your actions in simple, clear language to ensure that the end result is exactly what you intended.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source and Destination drives are of EQUAL size?

If source and target are of the same size, EZ Gig creates an absolutely identical copy(clone). On this clone, all sectors on source and target, from the first to the last sector, are 100% identical, provided that the process was error-free.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source drive is SMALLER than the Destination drive?

If the source is smaller than the target, EZ Gig copies only the data that is available on the source. This data is copied from the beginning of the source onto the beginning of the target medium. The area at the end of the target medium, which is larger than the source, remains unaffected. Apart from that the unaffected area remains possibly unused during a later usage, such a copy is usually comparable to a real clone as far as the capacity of use is concerned because the target contains entirely all data of the source.

Palm-Size Device Recovers Data Fast

May 26, 2008 | Mario Morejon | Publication: CRN Magazine

At one time or another, just about every solution provider out there encounters a dead system, in which the only recoverable components are the hard drives and the data in them. The typical course of action is to remove the hard drives and install them on another system back at the shop—a slow and costly process, for sure. But what if the data could be recovered instantly? The answer lies in a palm-size adapter from Poway, Calif.-based Apricorn Inc., called DriveWire. The DriveWire adapter connects IDE, SATA and Notebook IDE/PATA drives. Each side of the device hooks to a different hard drive. Power is supplied through a power adapter that provides the five volts needed to run the hard drives.

Collecting the data is easy. DriveWire supports USB 2.0, including USB 1.1, so drives are instantly detected on a Windows system and assigned a drive letter. After several tests with old drives, DriveWire performed well. Data transfer rates seen in the CRN Test Center were on par with the hard drives of all three types with no noticeable delays.

DriveWire comes with EZ Gig II cloning software, which supports FAT and NTFS file formats and can image entire drives and individual folders. Test Center reviewers tested EZ by imaging a drive right out of a DriveWire connection using high compression. The image was created right onto a DVD R/W disk. We didn't notice any corruption during the transfer, so the data was buffered correctly. EZ proved to be a good add-on to DriveWire. The software supports USB 1.1, so it's fully compatible with DriveWire and old PCs.

After several tests between Windows 2000 and XP, the adapter was able to recover data from old IDE drives without power or access speed problems. The two OSes are supported with Plug-n-Play, so during testing drivers were needed.

DriveWire Awarded 5 Star Recommendation

Have you ever wanted to get information off an old computer's internal hard drive? Have you wanted to be able to install a new larger hard drive in your notebook computer or desktop PC and do it quickly with all the drivers and software intact? Here is a cool device from Apricorn that makes it easy to plug in any new or used internal hard drive from a laptop or desktop (Mac or PC), to any external USB port on another Apple MAC or a Microsoft OS PC.

Apricorn includes both the DriveWire hard drive adapter hardware, with AC power adapter, cables, and USB cable, and software to be able to clone virtually any PATA/IDE or SATA, 2.5 or 3.5 inch, hard disk drives.

The DriveWire provides a hi-speed USB 2.0 interface to: SATA, 40 pin PATA/IDE, and 44 pin PATA/IDE.

DriveWire is bundled with Apricorn's "Upgrade Suite" which features the award winning "EZ Gig II" cloning software for Windows and "Shirt Pocket's SuperDuper!" for Mac

Five Star Recommendation ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I have used this universal hard drive plug-in adapter quite extensively myself for all types of applications. I have cloned Apple hard drives, tested old parallel IDE disk drives, used it to backup old computer systems, recovered files off a bad PC, and used it as an external connection for a spare hard drive for both PC and Mac computers. People have used it to quickly backup their system on an old hard drive and then placed that backup into a secure firesafe, not to be touched unless all else fails. The HD adapter has been a lifesaver for me. I don't like to touch a computer system unless I have a backup to begin with. You do not need to install any backup software or other special device drivers if you are just plugging in various hard drives. Simply plug in one hard drive at a time to the DriveWire adapter and plug the USB cable into your USB port, and it shows up on your "My Computer" on a PC, or your desktop on a Apple Mac. You can copy and retrieve information from an old HD drive. That is the beauty of this plug-in device. Fast, easy to use, reliable, and really really handy too.

This device is great for IT departments, techies, and even the ordinary person that simply wants to easily plug in a hard drive to see what is on it. Check out the video on how easy it is to use.

Cool Yule Tool Five Star Recommendation ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Anyone who has spent any time servicing or upgrading computers has undoubtedly run into the problem of just wanting to copy data off an internal drive that is no longer part of a functioning computer. Or you might just want to test the drive to see if it still works, but don't want to spend a lot of time installing the drive in a notebook or desktop PC.

That's where this handy little adapter from Apricorn comes in. The concept is simple – just plug it directly into any PATA or SATA drive, and plug the USB adapter into any PC. There are no drivers – if you are familiar with Windows administrative tools, you can have the drive ready to go in no time. The system also includes an AC adapter, in case your drive requires the use of separate, non-USB power.

The device really is a piece of cake. It's not the only product of this type on the market, but it is flexible, well-built, and a great stocking stuffer, for both professional PC repair types or home PC hobbyists. One quick thing – make sure you work in a grounded environment before trying the product – sitting in your pajamas under the tree is probably not the best locale for using the product.
