The Velocity Solo is the easiest way to add the speed of Solid State and
SATA III to your desktop
Upgrade your system to the latest SATA III interface (6Gbs) and add a high speed SSD to boost the performance to the max.
Easy to install, the Velocity Solo is an industry standard PCIe 2.0 card designed to add a 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD) via a super fast SATA III connection. With data transfer rates of 6Gbs, SATA III is twice as fast as SATA II and takes full advantage of the latest SSD. The Velocity Solo uses a Marvell SATA 6G AHCI Raid controller, delivering speeds up to 400MB/s Read and 220MB/s Write.* The Solo also provides an additional SATA III data connection that can be used to connect to another SSD or HDD to provide unparalleled capacity and performance.

Takes just minutes to install

Simply connect your Solid State Drive to the Velocity Solo SATA III connector and slide into an available PCIe slot in your desktop. Once installed, download and run Apricorn’s EZ Gig cloning software and your upgrade is complete. For additional capacity use the auxiliary SATA III connector for a super fast connection to an additional hard drive or solid state drive.

Ideal for High Performance Applications and Improving Gaming Performance

Running your OS and applications on an SSD provides a measureable performance increase, but the Velocity Solo is also the perfect upgrade for improving gaming performance.

SSDs Improve Game Performance - As games become too large for their assets to be fully cached on modern graphics cards and main memory, the addition of an SSD for faster disk access during game play results in less in-game pauses and a smoother playing experience. Games are also faster to load and save when using an SSD.

Blending Performance and Capacity – Apricorn’s EZ Gig Cloning Software with Data Select makes it easy

The Solo is bundled with Apricorn’s EZ Gig Cloning software with Data Select. Data Select provides a simple method to deselect data folders from the cloning process which is helpful when migrating from a large HDD to a smaller SSD and perfect for creating a Boot Disk. This gives you the option to run your OS and applications from a fast, smaller SSD boot drive, while keeping your documents and media files on your original hard drive.

EZ Gig enables you to clone your hard drive in just three simple steps

Step 1
Select your Source drive

This is usually your computer’s internal drive and is denoted by the prefix IDE

Step 2
Select your Destination drive

This is your external drive connected to your computer by Apricorn’s Velocity Solo

Optional
Data Select tool

Select files you wish to exclude from the clone, such as photos, videos, music or documents. This is helpful when migrating from a large HDD to a smaller SSD or when creating a Boot Disk.

Step 3
Press the "Start Clone" button

EZ Gig will clone everything to the SSD drive on the Velocity Solo. It really is that simple

Ask Question

What does a PCI-e slot look like?

The Velocity Solo can be used in any of the slots shown below.

What version of PCI Express does the Velocity Solo card use?

The Velocity Solo uses PCI Express 2.0. It is backwards compatible with PCI Express 1.0 but it will work at the slower speed.

What is the difference in data rate between PCIe 1.0 and PCIe 2.0?

Version 1 has a max data rate of 250 MB/s and Version 2 has a max rate of 500MB/s.

What kind of drives can be used with the Solo?

Any 2.5 SATA hard drives can be attached on the card and any standard SATA drive (Laptop or Desktop style) can be attached using the open SATA connector. It will work with both Generation 1 and 2 SATA drives but best performance is seen with Gen 2 or SSD drives.

Can the Velocity Solo card be used in a Mac?

Yes. Please purchase the Mac Edition of the Velocity Solo to use with a Mac Pro system.

How do I set the Velocity Solo to be my boot drive?

Clone your original drive to the new disk on the Velocity Solo. Then enter the BIOS settings during the boot up and navigate to the section of the BIOS where the boot sequence is identified. Move the drive on the Velocity Solo ahead of the currently selected boot drive.

Will the Velocity Solo work in a low profile desktop computer?

No. The Velocity Solo is a “Full Height” (4.376 in) add-in card and will not fit in a low profile or “slim” computer?

Do I have to use the Apricorn EZ GIG software with my Velocity Solo?

No. Apricorn provides EZ GIG as easy to use software intended to clone your existing operating system to a disk attached to the Velocity Solo. You are not restricted from using any other software.

Am I required to attach my original disk to the expansion port on the back of the Solo?

No. The expansion port on the back of the Solo is a SATA 3 connection that may provide additional performance to any disk attached to it, but you are not required to use it. Your original disk can remain attached directly to your motherboard or if unneeded can be removed completely.

How fast is SATA III?

SATA I max uncoded transfer rate is 150 MB/s (Megabytes per second), SATA II is 300 MB/s and SATA III is 600 MB/s. Most spinning disks cannot deliver data faster than SATA II and for this reason, Apricorn recommends using a high speed Solid State Disk with the Velocity Solo to achieve the greatest performance.

Installing the Velocity Solo Windows XP Driver

To use the Velocity Solo with Windows XP, you will need to download drivers from the Apricorn web site, and then follow these instructions.

1. Power down your workstation before installing the Velocity Solo card.
2. Remove the cover panel, and install the Velocity Solo in an available PCIe expansion slot.
3. Replace the cover panel, and boot your computer into Windows XP.
4. Download the driver installation file from http://www.apricorn.com/downloads/VelocitySolo_XPDrivers.zip
5. Extract the contents of the .zip file to a folder on your desktop.
6. Browse the expanded files and double click drvSetup.exe. It will be located in the folder AHCI.
7. Reboot your computer.
8. The drive attached to the Velocity Solo should now be visible in the Windows disk manager.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source and Destination drives are of EQUAL size?

If source and target are of the same size, EZ Gig creates an absolutely identical copy(clone). On this clone, all sectors on source and target, from the first to the last sector, are 100% identical, provided that the process was error-free.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source drive is SMALLER than the Destination drive?

If the source is smaller than the target, EZ Gig copies only the data that is available on the source. This data is copied from the beginning of the source onto the beginning of the target medium. The area at the end of the target medium, which is larger than the source, remains unaffected. Apart from that the unaffected area remains possibly unused during a later usage, such a copy is usually comparable to a real clone as far as the capacity of use is concerned because the target contains entirely all data of the source.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source drive is LARGER than the Destination drive?

If the source is bigger than the target, EZ Gig will direct you to the Data Select feature. EZ Gig’s Data Select provides a simple method to deselect data folders from the cloning process. EZ Gig will only allow to proceed with the clone, once the available capacity on the target drive is a positive value.

Can I just move my existing 2.5” HDD or SSD to the Solo and use it for my boot drive?

Yes. You would first put the Velocity solo into the PCIe slot on the motherboard and boot the computer with the existing hard drive in its current location. Windows will detect the new hardware and automatically install drivers. Next, shut down the computer and move your SSD to the Velocity solo. During next boot up, enter the BIOS of your computer and assign the SSD on the Velocity Solo as your boot device.

Note: Read Write speeds of the Solo are limited by the Marvel Raid controller to approximately 400 read / 200 write.

Hands-on: The Velocity Solo offers an easy upgrade to SATA 3.0

Dec 08, 2011 | Bill O'Brien | Publication: Computerworld

Apricorn's upgrade kit lets you use SATA 3.0 hard drives and SSDs in an older PC.

Read entire product review at Computerworld

If you're contemplating the cost of a new Windows-based computer to catch up with SATA 3.0 hard drives, you might be able to get away with just a $49 investment rather than a complete PC overhaul. Apricorn's Velocity Solo upgrade kit gives you access to SATA 3.0 hard drives and SSDs -- all you need is an x1 PCIe 2.0 slot -- and a SATA 3.0 drive, of course.

Out of the box

There is no real "unboxing" for the Velocity Solo; Apricorn markets it in a run-of-the-mill, hang-it-on-the-wall blister pack.

There are a couple of ways to connect the Velocity to your drive, depending on the type of drive it is. If you have a 2.5-in.SSD drive, you can mount it directly on the card by sliding it into the SATA data and power connector bank on the Velocity Solo and securing it with the screws provided.

If, on the other hand, you've installed a new SATA 3.0 hard drive, you can connect the data port to a connector located at the top rear corner of the Velocity Solo. (The power connection needs to be brought over from your computer as you normally would with any such installed hard drive -- the power directly available from the card is insufficient for a mechanical drive of any size.)

Whether you've used an SSD or a mechanical drive (or both), once the attachments are done, just plug the Velocity Solo into an available x1 PCIe slot, screw it to the backplane, and you're ready to close up your computer and start things up.

Operation

Once powered up, your computer should automatically recognize the Velocity Solo and any drives attached to it. If your drive hasn't already been partitioned or formatted, you'll need to do that through the usual disk management options found in the Control Panel's Administrative Tools icon.

The EZ Gig software promised on the blister pack is actually a download from a section of the same website. EZ Gig is disk drive cloning software that will let you, for example, re-create your current boot drive onto your new Velocity Solo SATA 3.0 drive despite any variance in capacity between the source and target drives. You can then use the BIOS options available on your PC to make one of the Velocity Solo drives your new boot disk.

Bottom Line

Apricorn has always made some very credible niche products (like its Upgrade Kit for 5th Generation Video iPods) and not-so-niche products (such as the EZ Writer II portable DVD burner). The Velocity Solo doesn't go against that grain. Being able to add a SATA 3.0 disk system to a tired old PC without replacing the motherboard -- or the entire computer -- is a wonderful idea. And being able to install an SSD without trying to figure out how to fit a 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch bay is even better. (Duct tape is not an effective long-term solution.)

I give Apricorn a big Geek Thumbs Up for the Velocity Solo.

Velocity Solo provides Champagne Speed on a Beer Budget

Feb 01, 2012 | Michael Berman | Publication: ScrippsNews Service

Do you have SATA III desires but only an IDE budget?

Do you find yourself drooling over those new, high-speed PCs, but only have lint and a couple of quarters in your pocket?

Fear not! The folks at Apricorn have developed a way for you to upgrade that old PC to take advantage of SATA III, high-speed technology.

The new Velocity Solo ($49) Desktop SSD Upgrade Kit allows users of older PCs to install new 10,000 RPM hard drives or other SATA III or solid state drives (SSD) on their computers. Of course, you still have to purchase the drives.

We popped a Velocity Solo into an empty PCI/e slot on an older Hewlett Packard computer and were up and running in about five minutes.

The Solo gives you the option of installing a full-size drive and attaching it using a SATA III cable or slipping a 2.5-inch notebook drive into a slot on the Solo, eliminating the need for a SATA III cable.

We installed two 2.5-inch notebook drives --- one was a Seagate 750 GB Momentous XT and the other was a 250 GB drive provided to us by Apricorn for testing purposes --- switching them out and booting the computer from each drive.

Both drives worked perfectly and significantly reduced computer boot time, due to the higher spin rate of SATA III (up to 10,000 RPM) and, because we were now using SSDs, we were able to take advantage of their ability to read data at up to 6 GB/second.

The upgrade kit comes with a SATA III cable and EZ Gig cloning software, which you have to download from Apricorn's website. The software enables you to choose which programs you want to transfer to the new drive and simplifies the process of creating a new, faster boot drive. Check out Apricorn's website at www.apricorn.com for more information on the Velocity Solo and other Apricorn products.
