With its integrated USB 3.0 cable, the Aegis Portable is ready when you are, no more forgotten cables! With blazing USB 3.0 speeds you can now access your data faster than ever before. And the Aegis Portable is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so you can connect to any USB port.

The Aegis Portable 3.0 is the ideal hard drive to add additional capacity to your system. Perfect for storing photos, music and video files.

Engineered for people on the go, the Aegis Portable 3.0 comes with everything that you need to take you data with you including an integrated USB 3.0 cable so you can be connected at a flick of a fingertip; a padded travel pouch to protect the drive while traveling; and an auxiliary USB 3.0 Y-cable enabling you to harness the power of two USB ports in the rare instance that additional power is needed.

How much faster is the Aegis Portable USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 provides an enormous speed boost when accessing your data.

The below table compares the real world data speeds of the Aegis Portable USB 2.0 version with both the hard drive and solid state versions of the Aegis Portable 3.0 via a USB 3.0 connection.

Which is best for me - Hard Drive or Solid State Drive?
The Aegis Portable 3.0 is available with either a hard drive or a solid state drive and depending on your needs, one will be better suited to your particular requirements.

If a large capacity drive is the most important feature for you, then the Aegis Portable's hard drive version is the one for you. With USB 3.0 this drive has impressive data transfer speeds of over 100 MB/s (compared to 34 MB/s for USB 2.0) and can store a huge number of files.

However, if you are looking for super fast data speeds, then the Aegis Portable solid state version is the one you are looking for. With an over 360% increase in data transfer speeds over its USB 3.0 connection (360 MB/s) this drive takes advantage of an internal SATA III connection to its solid state drive, fully utilizing its solid state performance.

Why use a Solid State Drive?
• Data Transfer Rates of 360 MB/s (360% increase over a rotating hard drive)
• 5X Greater Life Expectancy than Premium Rotational Drives
• Works in extreme temperatures
• Freezing temps of 40°F (40°C) below 0
• Searing temps of up to 158°F (70°C)
• Unaffected by high humidity
• Works in 95% humidity at temps under 131°F (55°C)
• Virtually shock and vibration resistant
• Rated to: Shock 1500G/0.5ms, Vibration 20G/20-2000Hz
• With no moving parts, the Aegis Portable SSD is completely silent

Ask Question

What are the ECCN and HST codes used for shipping this device outside the US?

ECCN: 5A992A and HTS code 8473.50.3000

Will the drive work on any USB port?

Yes. The Aegis three is a USB 3.0 device, but it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 , 1.1 and USB 1.

Why does the drive disappear when writing to it?

If you drive disappears when writing to it, it may be drawing to much current for your USB port or hub. Try adding the “Y” cable for additional power from a different USB port.

Aegis Portable 3.0 with USB 3.0 Y-cable

Can this drive be used for Windows to Go (Win8)?

It has not been added to Microsoft’s approved list, but the drive will work well for this application.

What kind of speed can be expected out of this drive?

USB speed will be affected by a variety of factors (USB type – 1, 2 or 3, Host controller, Driver version, hard drive read/write speeds, Operating System).

On average, if using a USB 3.0 port, speeds should be from 80+ MB/s for a newer rotating drive and 250+ MB/s for a newer SSD version.

If you are experiencing lower than expected speeds, check to make sure you have the latest host controller driver available. If you are getting considerably less, make sure that you are plugged into a USB 3 port. USB 3 ports use a blue center contact.

Q. What is BadUSB and are Apricorn devices susceptible to this exploit?

A. BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August of 2014. SR Labs demonstrated a vulnerability in one USB device that allowed malicious code to be programmed into the USB controller through a firmware update process. The attack described is very sophisticated and in the case of Apricorn’s products would require advanced knowledge of our USB controller, a leaked version of our firmware, the programming tool to update our controller, the password used for our programming tool, and an in depth understanding of the device’s functionality, etc. According to SR Labs, the failsafe method to eliminate this threat is to simply disable the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Many of Apricorn’s devices shipping today, including all of our USB 3.0 security products, Padlock and Padlock Pro families already have the firmware locked which prevents field updates to the USB controller. As a continuous improvement, Apricorn is locking down the firmware on all USB controllers used in Apricorn devices to safeguard against this vulnerability. We recommend checking our website periodically for notices regarding BadUSB and Security Updates.

Having fun with super-fast storage drives

Why it's Cool

Because solid-state drives have no moving parts (compared with external hard drives) speeds are typically much faster. In my speed tests on my older MacBook Pro system (utilizing a USB 3.0 connection via the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock – see below), I achieved an average of 113MBps of write speeds, compared to an average of 28MBps via the USB 2.0 port on the same system. Even more interesting was the test with the newer MacBook Pro system – with a built-in USB 3.0 port and faster processor, the Apricorn Aegis achieved screaming speed – on average I got about 306MBps of write speeds.

Aegis Portable 3.0 Receives A Grade

Armchair Critic Reviews Aegis Portable 3.0

Categories of accessories are pretty well established these days now that computing is a mature platform. When thinking of external storage that gets plugged into a USB port, on the one hand we have the small flash drive. It is light and portable, but limited by the capacity. On the other hand we have an external hard drive. These devices offer high capacity, but the trade off is increased weight, a larger size, and they are subject to mechanical failure.

The Aegis Portable 3 fits in neither category, and in fact straddles between these two categories. It is an external drive, that fits into the 2.5" hard drive category, but it is based on an SSD drive (other versions are available with a mechanical hard drive). While it still has the size of an external casing of a notebook hard drive, it gains the advantages of first and foremost speed, and secondarily a lighter weight, and a resilence to falls.

Overall Grade: A
