  1. Great tool to have. Review by G-Wolf

This tool showed me that Apricorn still has a great product for cloning hard drives. This thing works great and I have used it three times in one week with no problems. I highly recommend this product to anyone that has a hard drive that's too small for their current laptop PC or if their hard drive is starting to act up and they want to upgrade. 3. Great and easy to use Review by Joejoe

Pretty much plug n play. Worked great. I used it to pull data off of a hard drive from a laptop that gave out on me. (Posted on 4/12/13)

  4. I like it! Review by Sonata System

This is a great product! I was skeptical as I found it on a shelf in the BestBuy store. This thing worked exactly as it says. Cloned an entire SSD to a HDD. Took 10 minutes. Very pleased. (Posted on 2/13/13)

  5. Works as advertised Review by Bill

You don't have to be nervous about upgrading your hard drive anymore. While there may be cheaper solutions, this is one of the easiest. I have only a USB 2.0 but with 3.0 it could be used as a legitimate everyday 2nd drive also. (Posted on 11/22/11)

Ask Question

Will the SATA Wire work with desktop size drives?

No. Desktop drives require both 5 volt and 12 volt signals. The SATA Wire gets power from the USB port, which can only provide the 5 volt signal.

Can the SATA Wire be used with the older USB 1.1 or 2.0 port?

Yes. The SATAWire is backward compatible with older versions of USB.

Can the SATA Wire be used without the cloning software?

Yes. The SATA Wire can be used as a way of accessing data on a drive and no software needs to be used to accomplish this. Once plugged in, the drive should show up as a new drive letter in My Computer (assuming the drive is formatted and partitioned). For new drives, access disk management to partition and format the drive. It can then be used as a storage drive.

Can the SATA Wire be used to recover data off an old drive?

If the drive shows up in Windows explorer, the SATA Wire can be used (without the software) to access the file system and recover files. If the drive does not show up, recovery software can sometimes be used to recover files on a corrupted drive. This assumes that the drive is still functional.

Can I boot Windows to my USB Device?

No. Because of limitations (both hardware and software) Windows is currently prevented from booting and running off a USB drive.

I am unable to format my 40GB or larger hard drive with FAT 32 in Windows 2000 or XP?

Windows 2000 and XP limit a FAT32 partition to 32GB. If you choose to format the drive in a larger partition, you will need to use the NTFS file system.

Can I make a clone of my drive and put it in a different machine?

A clone is for disaster recovery purposes (i.e. when your drive fails and you need to get back up and running). No, you should not make a clone of your drive and put it in another or multiple machines. There are licensing issues for the software on your machine.

What Mac software is included with my SATA Wire?

Shirt Pocket SuperDuper! is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. It’s incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs! SuperDuper’s interface confirms all your actions in simple, clear language to ensure that the end result is exactly what you intended.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source and Destination drives are of EQUAL size?

If source and target are of the same size, EZ Gig creates an absolutely identical copy(clone). On this clone, all sectors on source and target, from the first to the last sector, are 100% identical, provided that the process was error-free.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source drive is SMALLER than the Destination drive?

If the source is smaller than the target, EZ Gig copies only the data that is available on the source. This data is copied from the beginning of the source onto the beginning of the target medium. The area at the end of the target medium, which is larger than the source, remains unaffected. Apart from that the unaffected area remains possibly unused during a later usage, such a copy is usually comparable to a real clone as far as the capacity of use is concerned because the target contains entirely all data of the source.

How does EZ Gig clone if the Source drive is LARGER than the Destination drive?

If the source is bigger than the target, EZ Gig will direct you to the Data Select feature. EZ Gig’s Data Select provides a simple method to deselect data folders from the cloning process. EZ Gig will only allow to proceed with the clone, once the available capacity on the target drive is a positive value.

Why doesn’t my SATA Wire 3.0 or EZ Upgrade 3.0 work with my computer’s USB 3.0 port?

A very small percentage of computer manufacturers incorporate an ASMedia 1042 or 1043 USB 3.0 Host Bus Controller. Revision 1 thru 4 of this ASMedia chipset does not adhere to the USB 3.0 standard and is not compatible with Apricorn USB 3.0 products. If your computer was manufactured with one of these chipsets, you will only be able to use your Apricorn product on a USB 2.0 port. For troubleshooting purposes you can view the manufacturer of your USB 3.0 chipset by viewing the properties of your USB 3.0 controller in the computer's Device Manager, unfortunately the revision of the chipset is not displayed.

What are the ECCN and HST codes used for shipping this device outside the US?

Overall Windows support for large sector media

This table documents the official Microsoft support policy for various media and their resulting reported sector sizes. See this KB article for details.

Windows Support

NOTES: While not stressed in the preceding table, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2003 R2 do not support 512e or 4Kn media. While the system may boot up and be able to operate minimally, there may be unknown scenarios of functionality issues, data loss, or sub-optimal performance. Thus, Microsoft strongly cautions against using 512e media with Windows XP or other products based on the Windows XP codebase (such as Windows Home Server 1.0, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Windows XP Embedded, Windows Small Business Server 2003, and Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2).

Q. What is BadUSB and are Apricorn devices susceptible to this exploit?

A. BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August of 2014. SR Labs demonstrated a vulnerability in one USB device that allowed malicious code to be programmed into the USB controller through a firmware update process. The attack described is very sophisticated and in the case of Apricorn’s products would require advanced knowledge of our USB controller, a leaked version of our firmware, the programming tool to update our controller, the password used for our programming tool, and an in depth understanding of the device’s functionality, etc. According to SR Labs, the failsafe method to eliminate this threat is to simply disable the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Many of Apricorn’s devices shipping today, including all of our USB 3.0 security products, Padlock and Padlock Pro families already have the firmware locked which prevents field updates to the USB controller. As a continuous improvement, Apricorn is locking down the firmware on all USB controllers used in Apricorn devices to safeguard against this vulnerability. We recommend checking our website periodically for notices regarding BadUSB and Security Updates.

How fast is SATA III?

SATA I max uncoded transfer rate is 150 MB/s (Megabytes per second), SATA II is 300 MB/s and SATA III is 600 MB/s. Most spinning disks cannot deliver data faster than SATA II and for this reason, Apricorn recommends using high speed Solid State Disks with the Velocity Duo x2 to achieve the greatest performance.
